The NTU Debating Society is very active in the local debating and public speaking scene. We organize Singapore's largest debating tournament, the Dorothy Cheung Inter-Tertiaries Debating Championship and Public Speaking Competition. Each year, about 150 students from JC's, polytechnics, and universities compete for the title. In 2005, NTU Debating Society has pioneered Singapore's first Model United Nations (MUN), serving as a trailblazer for debating institutions nationwide. The MUN is endorsed by the United Nations Association of Singapore (UNA-S) and the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS).
We have arranged as well as participated in Inter-varsity public speaking and debating circuits, English and Chinese debates, and workshops for interested parties. The NTU Debating Society's activities are geared not only towards the seasoned debaters and orators, but also to people within and outside NTU who are keen to learn more about public speaking and argumentation.
Together with the IVP Debating Squad, the NTU Debating Society has been the university's flagbearers in debate tournaments all over the globe. We held the Asian Universities Debating Championships in 2005, when over 300 people from 10 countries came down for various stages of preparation and competition.We also hosted the World Universities Debating Championships in 2003, when you had over a 1000 people from over 50 countries coming down.
